Q1:
What are the differences between hardware modem, controller-less modem
and software modem? |
| |
A:Modem
products have some control mechanism to manage the communication work.
The mechanism can be executed by using controller or software. If
the mechanism is executed by software with no Microcontroller, this
kind of modems are called controller-less modems or Winmodemstm. Both
of controller-based modems and controller-less modems are called hardware
modems.
There is another kind of modems, software modems, because they are
controlled by software. They share the CPU capacity when they works.
CNet's 56K modems include the three types of products. The following
is the table of models:
| Hardware
modem |
Software

| Controller-based |
Controller-less

Q2:
Why do Modems stop connection after a few minutes? |
| |
A:You
should check if the correct country code is selected when you install
the device. If not, the connection will disconnect after handshaking.
Or please contact tech support to ask a driver for the problem. |
|
|
| |
Q3:
Every time my modem dials Internet, the modem internal speaker (buzzer)
always makes loud noise. How can I turn down the volume? |
| |
A:Please
use ATM0 command to turn off either the modem internal speaker or
buzzer. Then it won't bother you again. |

Q4:
What kind of improvements does V.92 offer? |
| |
A:V.92
offers exciting features and improvements over the old V.90 standard.
These features may not immediately be available with all ISPs. Contact
your ISP to whether it include V.92 technology into its server or
not:
4.1 Modem on Hold
Modem on Hold "suspends" your online session for incoming
calls and returns to your online activities after your conversations
without redialing. Please note that Call Waiting service from your
telephone company is required.
4.2 Quick Connect
Quick Connect "remembers" line conditions from the previous
session, bypasses portions of the training sequence, and gets you
online faster. Reduce your dial-up connection time up to 50%!
4.3 V.PCM
This enhancement makes the online experience faster and better for
those who send information instead of just Web surfing. If you're
a gamer, you'll be able to send your commands at greater speed than
your opponents who have outdated modems! V.PCM Upstream reaches upstream
speeds up to 48 Kbps and lets you choose either the fastest downstream
speed (up to 56 Kbps) or a "balanced" connection of downstream
and upstream communication. |

Q5:
How and why should I flash the modem? |
| |
A:You
should contact CNet's tech support to provide the latest version of
flash utilities and firmware. Then you can load the latest firmware
to upgrade your external modem. The reason you want to flash the modem
with new firmware is because it will increase the performance of the
modem, such as increasing the connection speed and preventing disconnection
when the computer is left idle, etc. |
|

| |
Q6:
What if I install two USB modems on a computer and can't activate
them to work at all? |
| |
A:You
had better to avoid using the same chipset of USB modems installed
on the same computer. For example, CNUM56-RS uses Conexant CX06836-11,
you have to find another USB modem with different chipset to equip
with a computer. |

| |
Q7:
Why is my modem getting NO DIAL TONE? |
| |
A:The
most obvious cause is that you've neglected to plug your telephone
line into your modem. Double check to make sure. Or the telephone
cable may be bad -- test it on a regular telephone.
7.1 A common problem is plugging your telephone line into the
wrong jack on your modem. Many modems have two jacks, one for the
telephone line and another one for a telephone handset.
7.2 Another common problem is that some other device on the
same telephone line (e.g., a telephone answering machine) is off-hook.
Double check to make sure that all other devices are on-hook.
7.3 There may be a problem on your telephone line. Make sure
that you can get a dial tone on a telephone handset connected to and
through your modem when the modem (or computer in the case of an internal
modem) is turned off.
7.4 Many voicemail systems use a "stutter" dial tone
or beeping when you pick up the phone to indicate that you have voicemail
waiting. These unexpected sounds can make the modem think there is
no dial tone. If you must use the modem on a line with these voicemail
or similar sounds, you can try the following workarounds:
7.4.1 Increase the amount of time that the modem waits for
dial tone by setting the number of seconds to wait in register S6
(e.g., S6=5).
7.4.2 Lower the Xn setting to an odd number value to make the
modem ignore dial tone and dial blindly (e.g., X3 instead of X4, or
even X1). |

Q8:
Why do I get disconnected all the time? |
| |
A:You
are getting intermittently disconnected by our 56K modems, you may
need to upgrade your modem's driver, please go to www.cnet.com.tw/download/
to download a suitable driver for the modem or contact tech support. |
